Retrospect 2007

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Porgy en Bess Jazz club - Terneuzen ( The Nertherlands)

On the last day of the year one always has the feeling to have a backward glance to the events that happened during the past year. So do I. But looking backwards is very dangerous, as you might forgot to mention certain events. One of the highlights of the year were the concerts due to the celebrations of the 50th birthday of the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the far southwestern part of The Netherlands. The month of April was filled with great concerts, like the opening concert at The Scheldetheater with Toots Thielemans and Kenny Werner and the concert of Roy Hargrove. Also the performance of Roberta Gambarini in the fall of this year, also part of the 50th birthday celebrations of the club, was one of the most memorable concerts during that event. Thanks to all the volunteers of Porgy en Bess and I'm sure, 2008 will be a year with new great concerts in our Huiskamer van de Jazz ( = Living room of Jazz)

Roberta Gambarini
For me it was great to hear Hamilton de Holanda perform, the young Brazilian bandolim player who exports Choro Music, live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam and the concert of Richard Galliano was an unexpected surprise: what a great accordion player !! In November of this year Frank Morgan gave a memorable concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen, that happened to be one of his last ones, as he passed away two weeks later.
There were also some concerts I couldn't join; sometimes because of appointements; sometimes because the venues were on the other side of the world: What about the First Belgian Ukulele Festival? Or the festivities around the celebrations of Bill Tapia's 100th birthday ( which will be actually tomorrow) or the jubileum concert of Tito Martino in Sao Paulo - Brazil.

Hamilton De Holanda - Daniel Santiago
Thanks to my daily Keep swinging web log, I came into contact with a lot of interesting people who all had their own passions or dreams, like Mikayla who loves to become a great jazz journalist or Yvette Dorham, who loves to collect all info about her father Kenny Dorham and Esther Groenenberg and Heather Simmons, who both dream of a great vocal career. Making my Keep Swinging Web Logs was a daily challenge, that gave a lot of satisfaction, thanks to the contacts with visitors. Threehundred and sixty five contributions a year is a lot and thanks to Joergen, my friend, right-hand man and co-editor I could even have some vacations now-and-then. Thanks Jo !! All previous blogs stay, thanks to my link sites and search machines all available in the archives. Next year I want to recall contributions, like annual rings of a tree. Well let's try to reach the 1000 contributions before the end of the year !!

Hamilton De Holanda - Daniel Santiago

Eubie Blake Remembered-3

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
A few weeks ago I made
a contribution about the great album The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake. One of the readers who sent me his remembrances of Eubie Blake ( 1883-1983) was Lee Munsick. His reaction was very interesting and I asked him to publish his remembrances in my daily Keep Swinging web log. You can find his first contribution here. His second one was posted a few days later, and his final one is published today.

Back in New Jersey, every year we at Yesteryear ( in the Morris County Cultural Center outside Morristown, New Jersey), held a benefit show. The first with Max Morath was a week before the opening of the museum in October, but the others were all in late May or early June. I have known Max since the 1960s, when I produced Jaycee benefit shows (Jaycee means: Junior Chambers) in which he was featured, along with other notable performers. The Yesteryear benefits in the 70s became a highlight of the social scene in affluent Morris County. We were blessed with such performers as William Bolcom and Joan Morris (then affianced), Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt (married), repeat demand performances by Morath, and a number of other nostalgic programs, 7 or 8 in total.

The only one which we at Yesteryear actually produced ourselves, featured Eubie Blake. It wasn't until just before I introduced Eubie's performance that I learned it, but ours was World Premiere of Eubie's Rhapsody in Ragtime! It also featured screening a very early 1920s Lee de Forest Phonofilm (pioneer optical sound on the film) with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, a very young Eddie Cantor, and the hugely popular DeWolf Hopper reciting his perennial favorite, "Casey at the Bat".

Eubie Blake - Noble Sissle in the 1923 Lee de Forest Phonofilm

Eddie Cantor in the 1923 Lee de Forest Phonofilm

We also played an Aeolian piano roll cut by Eubie Blake, while he told us the intriguing story of how it came about. The program book included a copy of the first paycheck made out by Thomas A. Edison to Eubie Blake for his first phonograph cylinder, a sound recording which we also played. A long program, it was a phenomenal evening which anyone present was sure to remember for years to come.

Carl Seltzer managed Eubie Blake and produced the wonderful series of Eubie Blake Music LPs. Carl recorded our presentation, edited down the nearly 3-hourshow, and put it out in LP form. I wished it could have been 2 LPs for more of the program, but I had the pleasure of writing the liner notes. I believe that it and several other former EBM issues are still available in CD form.
Eubie Blake was a wonderful gentleman. And gentle man. A phenomenal talent. Marion, his wife, was a delight, and I miss them both. I shall treasure these and other memories with them and the many other folk I have mentioned as well as others, until I reach that Centennial figure myself. Wish me luck!

This concludes the last part of Lee Munsick's remembrances. Thanks Lee !! If you love to contact Lee I'll forward your commends: keepswinging@live.nl

Een paar weken geleden plaatste ik
een bijdrage over het schitterende album The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake.

Elk jaar organiseerden we in New Jersey in ons Yesteryears museum ( in het Morris County Cultural Center buiten Morristown, New Jersey) een benefietavond.

Wens me succes !!

Bossa Britanica

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Yesterday I went to Tilburg by car, a city in the south of The Netherlands, about one and a half hour from my residence. I had an appointment with Earl Okin
, vocalist, guitar player and entertainer who is in Holland for two performances at the Stranger than Paranoia festival in the Paradox jazz club in Tilburg. I told about him in a previous blog.

We had lunch together in a lunchroom at the Heuvelring in the centre of the city, omelet with mushrooms, bacon and pepper and chocomel for drinks.

We talked about his performance at a full house Paradox club last night, where he had to announce the artists and entertain the audience with his songs and acts. Of course we talked about our common interests, like record collecting,
durium records ( Earl has a few durium records, featuring Al Bowlly in his large collection of 78s) and his career which started in fact at the age of 12 when he appeared on a BBC TV talent show called "All Your Own", he wrote song for Cilla Black and Georgie Fame, went on tour with Van Morrison and was asked to support Paul McCarthy and Wings. Then he became a fully professional being a comic in the London alternative comedy circuit, where they throw things to you ..... (as he explains on his CD Musical Genius & Sex Symbol). While on tour and performing all around the world Earl met a lot of interesting persons and performed with musicians like Stephane Grappelly, he met Benny Carter and Earl Hines, is captivated by Duke Ellington ( he values his piano playing more then his ensemble work ) and by his 78rpm recordings of legendary opera heroes like Enrico Caruso. In 1964 he learned about the bossa nova and this Brazilian music fascinates him.
On his album Earl Okin - Musical Genius & Sex Symbol, he plays a great bossa nova styled Swonderful originally recorded by George Gershwin and pokes fun with the Portuguese pronounciation of names like Joao Gilberto or Antonio Carlos Jobim and with the music business, where A & R men ( under 19 years old with one ear ring, tone deaf or just deaf and an IQ too low to get into the army forces) copy hits because the people love to hear that ...
I learned that he, although billed as the Comic Musical Genius & Sex Symbol, in fact loves to play bossa novas. In 1975 he went to Brazil and played with Brazilian samba and bossa nova legends like Elis Regina, Gal Costa and Joao Gilberto and surprised the Brazilian critics with his bossa compositions. He gave me a copy of his still unpublished CD Earl Okin - Bossa Britanica, which shows another side of Earl - his pashion for the Brazilian music. It contains 16 tracks of most own compositions, some bossa novas, some jazzy instrumentals using the guitar and sometimes overdubbed with piano and bass. Earl sings on some tunes in a smooth way, so typically for this music style sometimes accompanoed by himself on the so-called vocal trumpet or virtual trumpet, he also uses in his comic shows. I liked his own compositions Madrugada (Spirit of Dawn) and Guitar Samba (Samba do Violao) and his tribute to Duke Ellington Pitter Panther Patter on piano and bass.

Thanks Earl for your pleasant company and I wish you all the best for 2008 and for your next concerts in Singapore early next year.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Blue Lights

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Last night I played myself Blue Lights, the Rein De Graaff Trio featuring Herb Geller & John Marshall as released on the Blue Jack label. To be honest - it was a relief to listen to this album as other music dominated during the last days in the house. This album, dedicated to the music of Gigi Gryce, was recorded in Zeist, in the center of The Netherlands, at the 10th of July 2005. The quintet made a tour along Dutch jazz venues during the 2004 concert season and in July they performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. After that concert they recorded this album.

Herb Geller
Gigi Gryce was a bebop alto saxophone player. His real name was Basheer Qusim. He started his career in the bands of Tadd Dameron and Lionel Hampton early 1950s. He made a lot of recordings in small groups, like Oscar Pettiford's and founded his own group, titled The Jazz Lab featuring Donald Byrd. In the 1960s he concentrated on schoolteaching and wasn't active in concerts anymore. He passed away in March 1983. He is rather unknown as a musician, but some of his composition are known standards now, like Nica's Tempo. This tune is one of my favorites. As I wrote in a previous blog this tune Nica's Tempo as played by the Gigi Gryce Quartet in October 1955 is for me one of his best recordings. Mind that this quartet is a dream team with Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. I don't think you can find a better rhythm section in the 1950s.

Rein de Graaff
The album Blue Lights contains several Gigi Gryce compositions; of course Nica's Tempo, dedicated to the Baronness Pannonica De Koenigswarter, Nica for short, who was a patronesse for a lot of jazz musicians, like Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker. Other tunes on this album revive, like the opening tune ( one of my favorites of this album) Stupendous-Lee, Minority and the title tune Blue Lights. Both Herb Geller, who don't needs further introduction I think and John Marshall, a US trumpet player, both living in Germany now, are skilled musicians.
I learned that, not to my surprise, that this album was the number one Jazz Record for 2007 in the Critics' Poll selected by Coen de Jonge, jazz journalist of Jazzism, the leading jazz magazine of The Netherlands.

The last concert of Rein de Graaff and his trio at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen, on the 4th of November 2007, was a memorable one, due to the fact that his guest Frank Morgan, alto saxophonist, passed away some weeks later. It would be great if these concerts with the Rein de Graaff Trio featuring Frank Morgan were recorded too for release I certainly would be one of the first to get a copy, even if I had to laydown in a sleeping bag before the record shop. Well, I don't think I have to nowadays.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
