The such-and-such compilation of old noisy shellac recordings? No, not at all. These two compilations (Yahoo 2024 ans 2025) contain rare, most unreissued material, Unknown treasures in jazz history.

Ross De Luxe Syncopators ( Red Hot Jazz Archive )

Take the Ross De Luxe Syncopators. A rather unknown band - we know the names of the personel, we know that they made four records, all recorded in Savannah, Georgia at the 22d of August 1927 - 80 years ago. Time for a party? No, I don't think so - this event won't be world news - this band is forgotten, although it made some remarkable recordings - some jewels that should be in any collection. Two of the recordings, Don't You Wanna Know and Florida Rhythm are on this compilation. All eight were also reissued on an RCA LP titled Territory Jazz ( FXM1 7205 ), but if you don't have this album in your collection try the Red Hot Jazz website, a great site to be informed about this band.

Gunther Schuller was wildly enthusiastic about this recording session in his book The Swing Era. It is remarkable that a band, from the south ( this Territory band was based in Miami, Florida) in a rather rural setting, could grow into such a remarkable band. Characteristic for Ross De Luxe Syncopators, Schuller says, is that they play the head of the tune in some relatively conservative or popular fashion and then let the soloists and stylish ensembles loose for the remainder of the performance. In his book Schuller mentioned several musicians, who are playing in a great way, like Melvin Herbert and Robert "Cookie" Mason, two great trumpet players - Edmond Hall, who plays all kinds of saxophones ( not, I suppose THE Edmond Hall, clarinet player from New Orleans ) or Casker Towie who must have been a great banjo player. Alonzo Ross himself, director of the band, was a great arranger and leader as the tunes are well played, and well rehearsed. It is a pitty that this band, who only made four records ( 8 tunes) was disbanned in 1928. I think I'm going to play myself, as a mark of honour, these eight little treasures in jazz history today, over and over again. Jazz The World Forgot ( Jazz die de wereld is vergeten ). De titel van twee schitterende Yazoo CDs, uitgebracht in 1996. Jazz Classics of the 1920s - Early roots and branches of jazz, zijn de ondertitels, wat aangeeft dat de nummers op deze CDs teruggaan tot de oervorm van de jazz. Is dit de zoveelste verzamelCD met bijeengesprokkelde krakerige en lawaaiierige schellakplaten? Zeker niet. Deze twee Yazoo compilaties (Yazoo 2024 en 2025) bevatten zeldzame, vaak nooit eerder uitgebrachte, pareltjes van onschatbare historische waarde.

Neem nou de Ross De Luxe Syncopators. Een onbekende band. We weten net wie er in meespeelden en dat ze vier platen opnamen in Savannah, Georgia op 22 augustus 1927, precies tachtig jaar geleden. Tijd voor een feestje, zou je denken. Nee zo'n vaart zal het niet lopen - dit jubileum zal geruisloos verlopen zonder de nieuwszenders te bereiken en dat is eigenlijk vreemd. De band mag dan wel helemaal vergeten zijn; de acht titels zijn schitterend en zijn juweeltjes geworden, die in elke verzameling zouden moeten zitten. Twee van die opnamen, Don't You Wanna Know en Florida Rhythm staan op deze verzamel CDs. Alle acht tracks werden heruitgebracht op een nu zeldzame RCA LP getiteld Territory Jazz ( FXM1 7205 ), maar het zou toeval zijn als je die in je verzameling zou hebben. Wil je alle tracks horen ga dan eens naar de uitstekende Red Hot Jazz website, een paradijs voor verzamelaars en liefhebbers van deze oude muziek.

Het is opvallend, dat al op zo´n vroege datum een band in het zuiden, het meest landelijke deel van de Verenigde Staten ( deze zogenaamde Territory band was gevestigd in Miami, Florida ) zulke fantastische muziek maakte. Karakteristiek voor de Ross De Luxe Syncopators, schrijft Schuller, is that they play the head of the tune in some relatively conservative or popular fashion and then let the soloists and stylish ensembles loose for the remainder of the performance. ( .... is dat ze het thema op een vrij traditionele conservatieve manier vertolken, waarna de musici helemaal uit hun bol gaan ). In zijn boek noemt Schuller verschillende musici, die hem opvallen door hun fantastische spel, zoals Melvin Herbert en Robert "Cookie" Mason, de twee trompettisten, Edmond Hall, die allerlei saxofoons bespeelt ( volgens mij niet DE uit New Orleans afkomstige Edmond Hall, die later op de klarinet beroemd werd) en Casker Towie die een groot banjoïst geweest moet zijn. De leider, Alonzo Ross zelf, was een groot arrangeur; opvallend is hoe goed de nummers gespeeld worden en hieruit blijkt dat er veel en vaak geoefend werd. Het is jammer dat de band binnen het jaar opgegeven werd. Ik denk, dat ik vandaag nog maar eens alle tracks ga afluisteren als een eerbetoon aan deze schitterende band, die ons tachtig jaar geleden deze prachtige vergeten schatten uit de jazzgeschiedenis gaf. Luister nog maar eens naar Baby Stop Teasing Me en Believe Me Dear, zomaar twee nummers; de andere vier kun je vinden op de Red Hot Jazz website
