The Record Collector

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Yesterday afternoon I talked for some hours with Leendert about record collecting and my passion for jazz music. I showed him my Hit of the week collection, talked about discographies and my collection of jazz books and records. I told him about the fact that I love to share my collection with others, and that this Keep swinging web log bears the evidence.
Talking about record collecting we learned that we had a common passion for R. Crumb, beside an underground artist and musician, also a dedicated and passioned record collector. Some weeks ago we discussed here his film Crumb, and thanks to Joergen I found a copy of that film. I received a second documentary titled in Dutch Natte Dromen van Robert Crumb ( thanks to Floris ), which happened to be a 1987 BBC documentary. Thanks to Floris I do know now that this film was titled in English The Confessions of Robert Crumb.
I heard about a third documentary, both Leendert and Sjef mentioned it, that tells about Robert Crumb's passion for record collecting. It shows, Sjef told me, how they move his record collection, probably from California to France. On internet I found some titles of movies about record collecting, all dedicated to Robert Crumb, but I don't believe these are the documentaries Sjef and Leendert refer to: American Splendor and Ghost World. Can someone tell me what the title is of that documentary in which Robert Crumb moves his collection?
I found a fragment of one of the greatest 78rpm record collectors of the US, Joe Bussard. I like the way how he shares his passion with the viewers.

Lionel Hampton in concert - 1956

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

A few weeks ago when I had visited Brussels, Patrick Humbertgave me a picture made by Ed van der Elsken, the
great Dutch photographer. He made a lot of beautiful pictures, but for me his book Jazz with a lot of 1950s jazz pictures is really great. The picture I received from Patrick reads on the reverse Lionel Hampton Big Band. 1959, but that is not correct. This picture was taken during the evening of the legendary concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam 24th of March 1956. The concert in Amsterdam started in fact at midnight and was the second one that evening for Lionel Hampton and his Orchestra, as Lionel Hampton had a concert earlier that evening at the Houtrusthallen in The Hague.

The concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam became rather remarkable. Lionel Hampton was suffering from an attack of fever, but gave an exuberant concert. The audience danced and jumped and when one person became hysteric one of the security attendants of the Concertgebouw tried to remove him. Lionel Hampton played a great solo on the tom tom and after some moments he left stage and walked through the audience that danced with abandon. The complete band followed him. All people left their seats and danced through the hall. After some walks through the hall, Lionel Hampton returned to the stage. Lou van Rees, the organisator of this concert, wanted to stop the concert, but Lionel couldn't be stopped and started to sing Hebaberiba, and of course the audience yelled back.

One of those hysteric moments was recorded by Ed van der Elsken. The picture at the top of this blog, shows Lionel Hampton with his drumstick and on the ground Eddie Chamblee, while playing his saxophone. In fact, this picture and the pictures used in the news paper were actually taken in The Hague at the Houtrusthallen concert some hours earlier, but it gives a good atmospheric description.
It seemed that the concert would become a complete mess, and so the police interfered and accompanied Lionel Hampton to his dressing room. The police watched the doors.
Ed van der Elsken left us a great photo session from that concert, which became one of the most discussed Dutch jazz concerts of the XXth Century.
found two fragments I love to share with you. One is from a 1959 concert in Liege - Belgium, where Lionel Hampton plays with his band. It illustrates a bit the atmosphere during such a typically 1950s Hampton concert. The second fragment is from a concert where Lionel plays the tom tom.

Harlem Hot Chocolates

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
A few days ago I posted a contribution with a 1930 article and leaflet about the Hit of the week records. The leaflet refered to a Hit of the week record, played by the Harlem Hot Chocolates. I asked you to contact me what band was hidden behind that pseudonym. Several readers responded and Mike ( Salionas CA), Jerry (Amsterdam) and Howard (Baltimore MD) could name the correct band: Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.
What was the reason for this known black band to play under a pseudonym on a Hit of the week record? First of all we should remember that it was the time of the Great Depression. A lot of people lost all their money and so did the Duke. It was hard to generate income for his band members, as the public had to tighten its belts. It might be possible that the Duke had obligations to other record companies and that he needed this job on the side to get some extra income. On the other hand, Irving Mills, who was the vocalist and manager of the band, tried to promote the black Duke Ellington Orchestra to the white audiences. Mind that during this era the US still was a segregated country, with blacks and whites as two different groups of people, who lived together on an unequal base. The Hit of the week was a real white label, so making a record for Hit of the week, under the pseudonym of the Harlem Hot Chocolates ( which suggests that it was a black band performing) was a well-thought out promotion stunt. Maybe, Jerry, that's the reason they grin so much in the leaflet: You'll grim too, when you hear this blue number played by the Harlem Hot Chocolates.

The Harlem Hot Chocolates made two recording. Find the discogaphical information at my online Hit of week Discography
Isn't it remarkable that there has been only one reissue of a Hit of the week recording by another 78rpm record label, although it was a real bootleg. The Biltmore record ( BM 1014 ) was released somewhere during the 1940s and contains the tune Sing You Sinners by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.
I love to show you the first appearance of Duke Ellington on film. In Black and Tan Fantasy of 1929, one year before the Harlem Hot Chocolates recordings. The film starts with the moment that Duke Ellington shows Arthur Whetsol his new composition Black and Tan fantasy. I think that's a great part; later it gets bogged down in dramatical effects. Hope you can handle it !!

You'll grin, too, when you hear this blue number played by the Harlem Hot Chocolates.

Het bevat het nummer Sing You Sinners door Duke Ellington and his Orchestra.

Robert Normann

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
When you enter a CD shop nowadays, at least in The Netherlands, you learn that CD's are no longer hot items. They sell DVDs, most films for entertaining, but also films with music clips of popular artists. Even the jazz has to. Vitaphone film shorts and soundies from the 1940s and 1950s have been reissued, but also live performances of musicians like Miles Davis are to be found. Documentaries, made for televison, have been released for use in the livingroom.

Some times ago I found a DVD with some great 1970s performances of a rather unknown Norwegian guitar player, Robert Normann. The DVD is titled Robert Normann - Shine, with the subtitle The TV Collection.
This DVD contains ca. 40 minutes of rare fragments from performances Robert Normann made for the Norwegian television. In fact the set contains three parts. The first one are some 1971 black and white fragments; the second part, in color, where made in 1974.
The final part are some 1992 recordings of Robert Normann together with a drummer. It ends with some private shots from ca. 1993 of Robert Normann playing the guitar in his living room together with a collegue, who has to drop out when Robert shows his skills. A great experience.
Robert Normann, born in Sarpsborg, Norway June 1916, passed away May 1998 81 years old. He started at the accordion and tenor saxophone before he became a guitar player. In the late 1930s he played in bands like Freddie Valier's and Gunnar Due. The picture above shows Robert Normann in the right corner below at the guitar in the 1941 Rowland's Orchestra. In the 1940s he was part of the famous String Swing, a great Scandinavian group of jazz musicians. ( Nowadays the Swing Strings is a Danish jazz ensemble). He started his own quartet before he became part of the big band directed by Pete Brown. In the 1950s he played with Frank Ottersen, the violin player and Willy Andresen at the piano. Since 1955 he didn't play often in public and as he was a very modest person he stayed unknown outside Norway. Even in the books Jazzgitaristen ( Alexander Schmitz) and The Guitar in Jazz ( James Sallis) is name is absent. What a shame, because this DVD shows a very skilled jazz guitar player. I saw him labeled somewhere as The Best European Jazz Musician Ever.

The DVD shows a passionate guitar player. The quality of the films is very good and it is a joy to listen and view Robert Normann playing his music. This Shine DVD is, together with the great series of Robert Normann CDs published by Normann Records AS, and the Herman Records series Jazz in Norway by the Norsk Jazz Arkiv (Norwegian Jazz Archive) a great monument in honor of Robert Normann.
Kjetil Sørensen from Normann Records AS told me that all Robert Normann CD's previous released on Hot Club Records, are no longer available. Normann Records AS have released a new series of Robert Normann CDs where all the music/recordings have been digital restored from 78" records and not just copied from LPs to CDs as Hot Club Records did. Also the Robert Normann CDs Normann Records AS have released does not contain the same music order as the Hot Club Records CDs. Our CDs (Normann Records AS) does also contain some recordings Hot Club Record never have released.

Nellie Lutcher

Lil Green

Slick Chicks and Tough Mamas; what a great title for a CD compilation made by Bakhåll. This CD contains the slickest and toughest of blues and jazz ladies, as they explain on their website. ( a slick chick is an attractive and well dressed woman and a tough mama is a woman impossible to surpass, the best, the greatest ). It contains music of some seldom heard women in jazz and blues, like Lil Green, Albennie Jones, Georgia White, Nellie Lutcher, Marilyn Scott, Louisa "Blue Lu" Barker, but also some more known ladies from the scene like Victoria Spivey, Memphis Minnie, Cleo Brown and Dinah Washington. Last night I played my copy I received some years ago and I was fascinated by miss Nellie Lutcher. She really upset me with the two tracks on this compilation!!

Nellie Lutcher, born in October 1915 in Lake Charles (Louisiana) passed away some months ago ( 8th of June 2007) in Los Angeles, aged 94. She learned to play piano in local bands and started as a singer with the Southern Rhythm Boys, where she developed her remarkable vocal style. It took several years before she got the recognition she deserved. In 1947 she moved to Los Angeles where Dave Dexter, a Capitol Records talent scout, discovered her at a show. She made her first record in 1947, which became a hit ( Hurry On Down and The Lady's In Love With You) and she became popular in both the jazz and Rhythm and Blues music styles. He's a Real Gone Guy was her second record (Capitol 40017) and this tune is to find on this Slick Chicks and Tough Mamas CD. What a great tune. I was stuck by the boogie woogie rhythm ( or Rock & Roll avant la lettre if you like), with a great rhythm accompaniment of Nappy Lamar at the guitar, Billy Hadnott on bass and Lee Young on drums. The tune became a hit at all R & B radio stations all through the country.
The second track on this compilation album played by Nellie Lutcher is a well known tune, Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band, but played in a way I've never heard before. It was recorded December 1947 and it swings like hell; What a great entertainer vocalist, especially when she chats in Alexander's Ragtime Band. I read somewhere that someone labeled her as the woman Fats Waller. Her singing on this CD is very morish to me and it seems that The Bear Family record company in Germany issued a box set containing her entire body of work. Maybe that's an option?

Lil Green
