New Bottle Old Wine

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

In April - May 1958 Gil Evans made a memorable recording for Pacific, later released as New Bottle, Old Wine.

Thanks to Blue Note Records this long forgotten session is available again in her Connoisseur series as Gil Evans - The Complete Pacific Jazz Sessions

When I heard this session I realized what I had said in this blog about big band music - about the fact that the sound of a concert of big band music never can be recorded; this recording proofs to the contrary - it is possible. The music sounds fresh, open and has a transparency as in a live concert. A compliment on Blue Note.

This session contains eight tracks ( the Complete Pacific Jazz Sessions has 8 more tracks) composed or related to major figures in jazz like Louis Armstrong (Struttin' With Some Barbecue), Lester Young (Lester Leaps), Charlie Parker (Bird Feathers), Dizzy Gillespie ( Manteca), W.C. Handy ( St. Louis Blues), Jelly Roll Morton (King Porter Stomp) and Thelonious Monk ('Round Midnight).

The soloists to be heard during this session are Cannonball Adderley, Frank Rehak, Johnny Coles, Art Blakey and Paul Chambers.

I was surprised by the presence of the tuba, played by Bill Barber in four tracks of this record. It is amazing that this rather archaic instrument, associated with the Roaring Twenties, is used in this very modern sounding ( we are in 1958) music.

Mind that during the time of these recordings the other three famous recording session of Gil Evans and Miles Davis were made ( Miles Ahead - May 1957), Porgy & Bess (July 1958) and Sketches of Spain (Nov 1959). It is amazing that these recordings with Gil Evans and Cannonball Adderley didn't got the attention it should deserve.

A record to search for !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

With Some Barbecue), Lester Young (Lester Leaps), Charlie Parker (Bird Feathers), Dizzy Gillespie (Manteca), W.C.
